MySpaceTV Player Finally Makes Sense

MySpaceTV Player Finally Makes Sense

One of the reasons I don’t watch much MySpaceTV is its horrible, horrible video player. When you have a slider bar, forward and back buttons are pointless. Why waste space with volume controls when you can just slide them out?

The whole thing just stinks of offline video thinking. Good to see they’ve finally done something about it.

Recall that NBC CEO Jeff Zucker admits Hulu, the sucky NBC/Fox video site, copied a lot of stuff from YouTube. Looks like Fox’s MySpaceTV just did the same with their player.

Chad Hurley Tells the Story of YouTube

August 14th, 2008

At a startup dinner in Palo Alto the other night, YouTube founder Chad Hurley told the story of YouTube. Grab some popcorn, kids, because this is thrilling stuff.

YouTube’s been around three years. TV’s been around fifty years. The former is well ahead of schedule to kick the latter’s ass.

Recapture the 80s with this cassette tape watch

Recapture the 80s with this cassette tape watch

I’ve written before about both my love of good (preferably large) watches and my nostalgia for cassette tapes, and here’s a design that brings them both together with a dash of style.

It’s available for ??35.00 (around $69) from Asos, who for some strange reason have it in the men’s section of their website… Hey Asos, girls can be geeks too, y’know!

PickupPal – Connecting Drivers, Passengers and Packages

PickupPal - Connecting Drivers, Passengers and Packages

Here’s an interesting website I just uncovered that might alleviate some of the $4/gallon gas pains everyone is having.

It’s called PickupPal and it connects drivers with passengers and packages. I’ve seen sites for carpooling and ride-sharing before but this is a bit of a new twist.

PickupPal’s core service is providing a venue for either passengers or packages to find or be matched to a driver—typically already travelling in a certain direction or destination—for a small commission. This intelligent matching is performed via our own proprietary set of software algorithms that dynamically and in real time compare routing, frequency, locational, and driver/passenger preferences against a pool of registered users.

This kind of service may have really come in handy for me a couple of years ago when I sold an antique silver chest on eBay and ended up driving it to Norfolk, VA myself because I didn’t quite trust any other shippers.

Would you use a service like this? What other similar services have you seen to compare it to out there?

FantasyFishing.com – Are You Serious?

FantasyFishing.com - Are You Serious?

I’m driving home from work the other day and I see a sweet bass boat coming down the highway. I should probably clarify, it was on a trailer being pulled by a truck, I KNOW how boats work.

The cool part about this boat and truck was that they were matching! Both of them had “Folgers” coffee logo on them. Then I begin to think this guy’s a professional fisherman (or maybe won some kind of coffee drinking contest perhaps?) or something.

I get closer to it and see the following URL: www.fantasyfishing.com

That’s right, www.fantasyfishing.com and there it is, my curiosity is piqued and I’m just waiting to get home to check-out this website and what it’s all about.

Sadly, I couldn’t find a lot of details about what’s behind this whole thing, but I’m guessing you pick your fishing team hope your guy catches lots of fish.

Has anyone else seen this? Have you been playing? I’ve got to know more about it. What can you tell me.

iPhone Frenzy, Medialet’s monetizing the apps

iPhone Frenzy, Medialet's monetizing the apps

Will there be iPhone frenzy on July 11? We know that there will be plenty of phones to go around, but still my friends and I are already planning to line up at the Apple Store in the wee hours of July 11th to get first dibs. Why do we care this much about a mobile phone upgrade?

The new iPhone 3G has a lot going for it—simply stated, the pricing strategy alone is a win-win (we’ll pay less upfront and about $40 more in the long-term). But, it’s not about the price or the 3G tech, or the new plastics involved.

Far more significant than the hardware upgrades, all iPhones will be able to connect to the App Store, an on the internet service from Apple that will allow us to easily install third-party software that utilizes all of the iPhone’s capabilities. This newfound ability to run virtually any application will soon let the tiny, mobile Apple computer in our pockets do things for us that the machines on our desks could only dream of.

But what will all these life-changing applications cost us? Will the $200 I save on my iPhone 3G just eventually get gobbled up by the App Store instead? Will the average iPhone customer even want to pay for these apps? And, how in the world will companies focused on the Apps, like newly launched Instinctiv.com actually monetize the software?

Enter Eric Litman, founder and CEO of Medialets, a New York-based advertising delivery platform whose work I hope will end up saving me a lot of my hard-earned cash. His company encourages developers who might otherwise charge up-front licensing fees to instead give their wares away for free. The costs of development would be supported by showing innovative, dynamic advertisements displayed inside the apps with Medialets technology.

Where the Hell is Matt? (2008)

August 11th, 2008

Remember Matt Harding, the guy who did a silly dance in various locations around the world and posted it on YouTube? He’s at it again in Where the Hell is Matt? (2008) — and this time, he gets the locals into the act. Dancing Japanese maids FTW.

On a side note, this is how to do viral video marketing right — all heart, no bullshit. I honestly want a pack of Stride gum now. That’s probably why Stride has been sponsoring Matt’s sojourns for two years running.
