LinkedIn Idiocy

LinkedIn Idiocy

Can someone please explain to me why LinkedIn even has the “I don’t know Peter” option if they won’t let you use it? How many people have had their time wasted by that.

When you click on “Send Invitation” you get this message.

Here’s why I’d use this option in this case. I know Peter, I just don’t know his e-mail address. He was an exchange student

that lived with us when I was in high school. Haven’t talked to him since. Would love to reconnect with him now.

LinkedIn…thanks for nothing.

SanDisk Sansa e280 8 GB Digital Media PlayerThis compact MP3 player can hold 2000 of your favorite songs. You can even add more external memory with a MicroSD Transflash Card. The e280 plays MP3, WAV, WMA and ASF audio files. Unlike most other MP3 players, it also plays MPEG-4, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, WMV and AVI video files. The 1.8 inch screen is bright and displays the unique Sansa interface nicely. Cool features include FM Stereo Tuner, Voice Recorder, Radio Recorder and Built-In Card Reader. The Rechargeable Lithium Battery lasts for 20 hours when full charged, giving this media player, excellent battery life.

The sound quality is clear, just like an iPod, just without the price tag. The 2280 is very affordable, and is cheaper than any iPod. It also has a lock button, to avoid accidentally changing your playback. Durability is a plus on this device, since it’s built solid. The interface is simple and upfront. From a Gadget Addicts perspective, this mp3 player is an excellent choice if your looking for an MP3 player. The interface is different, so it will take some getting used too. The screen is going to get scratched if you don’t take good care of it, but if your at all careful, you’ll be alright. Also, the earphone that are included, aren’t exactly top quality. It seems like all you need to do, upon your purchasing your device, is to buy a sleeve for protection and earphones. Overall, I would choose the Sansa e280, over an iPod, any day.

What does mobile gaming have to do with saving mountain gorillas?

It turns out that this mobile game, Silverbackers, has everything to do with gorilla conservation. Go to the site to download the game and learn about these awesome creatures living in the forests of Central Africa – their population totals just over 700. What better way to bring attention to this problem than through our cell phones?

TripIt nabs $5.1 million from old-school travel powerbroker

April 25th, 2008

TripIt, which organizes personal travel information, expects to announce Thursday that it has raised $5.1 million in a series B round of financing from travel behemoth Sabre Holdings and German investment group European Founders Fund.

TripIt nabs $5.1 million from old-school travel powerbroker

Seed investor O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, which had previously put $1 million into the company, also participated in the round.

San Francisco-based TripIt, which was founded in October 2006, helps people plan trips, including flights and restaurant reservations, and then share their travel itineraries with friends and family. That the company raised millions from an old-school travel company like Sabre proves there’s still room to innovate in the business, especially with the use of social-networking applications.

TripIt said it expects to use the money to further develop and market its 6-month-old service in the United States and abroad.

Tim O’Reilly, partner at O’Reilly AlphaTech, said TripIt helps manage e-mail and personal data from the Web, which can sometimes work at cross purposes. “We have so many overlapping applications, and the next frontier is getting them to work better together,” he said in a statement.

Google tweaked search 450 times in 2007

April 24th, 2008

Google is typically tight-lipped about it the inner workings of its search business, but there are a few nuggets worth looking at in a Popular Mechanics interview with Udi Manber, the Google vice president who oversees search quality. Among them: Google rejiggered its search algorithm 450 times last year.

Google tweaked search 450 times in 2007

The job of the algorithm is to best match Web pages with people’s search terms. One tweak the company tried last week was increasing the “diversity” of search results so the listed Web pages would cover a broader scope in an attempt to compensate for the ambiguities of search terms, he said.

And while some might see the industry of search engine optimization (SEO), which strives to get Web sites higher placement on search sites, as gaming the system, Manber said that at least a basic amount would make his life easier.

“I wish people would put more effort into thinking about how other people will find them and putting the right keywords onto their pages,” he said.

He also said Google doesn’t adjust search results by hand.

“If we find, for a particular query, that result No. 4 should be result No. 1, we do not have the capability to manually change it,” he said. “We have to find what weakness in the algorithm caused that result and find a general solution to that, evaluate whether a general solution really works and if it’s better, and then launch a general solution.”

For those interested in the subject, I also recommend the New York Times interview with Manber from last year and another from Eric Enge at SEO firm Stone Temple Consulting. (I can’t help but note that the latter piece shows up higher in Google search results.)
